Best Practices & Key Recommendations

  1. Start Early
    • Clean a baby’s gums gently with a clean, damp, soft washcloth or gauze after feeding—even before the first tooth appears. Ada+2MouthHealthy+2
    • Take your child for a first dental checkup by the first birthday or within six months after their first tooth erupts. Ada+2AAPD+2

  2. Brushing Routine
    • Brush teeth twice a day (morning and at night) with fluoride toothpaste. MouthHealthy+2Ada+2
    • For children under age 3, use only a smear (grain-of-rice size) of fluoride toothpaste. Ada+1
    • From age 3 through about age 6, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Ada+1
    • Supervise brushing until the child is able to rinse and spit properly—around age 6. Ada+1

  3. Cleaning Between Teeth (Flossing / Interdental Cleaning)
    • Begin cleaning between teeth daily once there are two teeth that touch. Ada+1

  4. Fluoride Use
    • Use fluoride toothpaste as above. HealthyChildren.org+1
    • Talk to a dentist or physician about fluoride varnish once the first tooth appears. Ada+1

  5. Diet and Drink Choices
    • Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially those sipped slowly or frequently throughout the day. MouthHealthy+2MouthHealthy+2
    • Encourage water (especially fluoridated water, when available). Ada+2DentaQuest+2
    • Avoid putting a child to bed with bottles containing milk, formula, juice, or other sugary drinks; if using a bottle at bedtime, it should contain only water. Ada+2Just 4 Me Pediatric Dentistry+2

  6. Regular Dental Visits & “Dental Home”
    • Establish a “dental home” early—that means having continuous, comprehensive, and family‐centered oral health care from infancy. AAPD+1
    • Regular checkups help catch issues early and reinforce healthy habits. ADA Jada+2Ada+2
